Rain Barrels

 Rain barrels are sustainable (and free!) way to accumulate water for your garden and other outdoors uses. When placed under your home’s downspout, rain barrels collect water that would otherwise run-off from your property and potentially lead to flooding. Water collected from rain barrels can be used to wash cars, water lawns and gardens, and clean outdoor surfaces. Unlike tap water, rain water does not contain chlorine, lime, nor calcium; therefore, it is often better for sensitive plants and soil quality. However, rain water is not without its contaminants, as it can often be tainted with metals such as zinc and lead, and contain coliform bacteria such as E. Coli, after running off asphalt roof shingles and animal waste. For this reason collected rainwater is not potable, and likewise should not be used to water edible plants. While rainwater is safe for lawns and ornamentals, gardeners should be sure to use tap water for their fruit and vegetables. Rain barrels can be purchased at most major home-improvement retailers such as Lowes and Home Depot. The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago also sells and delivers rain barrels to Cook County residents for around 45 dollars. It's important that homeowners properly install their rain barrels, and store them for the winter months. The MWRD recommends rain barrels to be stored upside-down or on their sides in the winter months in an enclosed area to prevent damage caused by frost and ice.
